Today I skipped school. There you go, I said it.

Before you jump to conclusions though, you have to know that the reason why I did it is that I was invited to a summit at the Times Center. Oh lá lá, Sí señor!

After 3 days of intensive English business class, this was the perfect opportunity to practice it.

As you can see from the picture above, the event was very boring and complicated. Believe me, it usually happens when you grow up and you start working. So many social codes. Suddenly you have to speak and behave properly.

I didn’t have fun. I was surrounded only by people wearing a suite who would just speak about money and the good memories of the past.

Ok ok, I’ll stop. I absolutely loved it!

Getting to work for a whole day with people coming from different countries and company cultures was such an enriching and exciting experience.

Of course it wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t spent energies practicing English.

I studied English for 11 years, first alone, translating Michael Jackson’s lyrics (which, by the way, if you don’t have basic knowledge of the grammar, make no sense whatsoever) then at school and university. After I graduated I felt ready for my first experience abroad. I flew to Australia just 2 weeks after my graduation. When I arrived at Sydney airport everything looked promising but then I realised that I could understand maybe 20% of what I was hearing around.

Why am I telling you this? Well, first of all because in order to be able to get a job at an international company, start professional relationships with USA and go to a summit, I had to solve my “English issues”.

And here I am now, drinking cocktails on the 7th street in New York, making friends and connections like I used to do in college. The only difference between before and now is that 10 years ago I used to have cheap beer, now I have a Cosmopolitan and everything looks fancy.

So people, grab the bull by the horns, it’s worth it!
