Let’s exaggerate today.
Let’s say that 40s are the new 20s.
In 2015, in a period in which there are no frontiers anymore, in which we live in a flat world and we call someone in Kuala Lumpur as if they were our sister sitting next door, does it really make sense to build frontiers within ourselves?
My hero today is José, a Spanish student living his personal ESL adventure in New York. He is already thinking of the next destination.
When José discovered I am an ESLer the first thing he asked me was: “So, where should I go next?”
My dear José, if it was up to me really I would tell you to buy an around the world ticket. Get also a comfy backpack to store just enough socks to protect you from the cold and rainy days you might find in your way. But not a big one. Just bring your eyes and your legs. Everything else will come along.
José works; he is into music, he organises festivals in his country and he feels lucky to work with amazing people. José is 42 and today he told me: “Why 30s are the new 20s? Let’s make it ‘40s are the new 20s’.”
Andreas is another student. I already talked about him in the first episode. I said “Going against all stereotypes, the loudest person was a German guy in his late 30s.”
He is also the one holding the cake on episode 2. He brought the cake to school to celebrate his 53rd birthday. So yeah, I was wrong people, Andreas is not in his late 30s, but he keeps on being the loudest, by far!
At a certain point in his life he just decided to reinvent himself; he moved to New York and bought a bike. He has big plans for his future and, man, you can really see the sparkle in his eyes.
So, I feel like exaggerating even more today and say: 50s are the new 20s.
60 are the new 20s!
It doesn’t really matter, you are 20 if that is what you feel you are. Everyone else is wrong.
And to the ones who used to tell me “you’re living a life as if you were an eternal Erasmus student” I say YES!
And I’ve been loving it.
What do you think?
