Museums, markets, concerts, sport events… Hamburg is proud to be Germany’s second biggest city! Our colleagues at Colón Language School gave us some tips that will help you enjoy the city for as little as €20! Have fun!
Sunday Fish Market
Are you an early riser or a night owl? Then the Hamburg Fish Market is a must-see! Go there on a Sunday morning and let the famous and loud market criers entertain you. In this 100-year-old fish auction hall, you can find pretty much everything – from fish and meat to fruit and flowers.
Explore Schanzen Viertel or Karo Viertel
Stroll around these hipster neighbourhoods: you will find cheap restaurants of all types (Indian, Greek, Italian, Mexican…) and trendy spots where you can have a good coffee, read the newspaper or simply watch cool people pass by. And if you can afford to spend a little more, many selected stores are also available in the area.
Cycle to Blankenese
Rent a bike at an affordable price and follow the cycling track to Blankenese, an exclusive suburb on the Elbe River that used to be an independent town. The picturesque lanes and the charming houses on the steep hillside are simply beautiful… Enjoy the view!
Hamburg’s Long Night of the Museums
Once a year, more than 50 museums open their doors to the public for a unique night of culture and entertainment. Student tickets are only €10 and this includes the shuttle between the different museums. Remember to wear confortable shoes… you are going to walk a lot!
Hamburg Port Anniversary
The Hamburg Port is the biggest one in Germany and its anniversary is an important event for the city. Take the ferries 61 and 62 to watch the ship parade or the tug boat ballet from the water or enjoy the different activities on land!
Christmas Markets
In winter, Hamburg turns into a fairytale city, offering not one but 16 different Christmas markets! Drink mulled wine (“Glühwein”) and watch Father Christmas fly over the stalls of the most traditional market in front of the Town Hall, or – if you want to see something really different and unique – go to the only over-18 Christmas market in Germany (Santa Pauli Christmas Market).
Open-air concerts at the Stadtpark
The Stadtpark Arena hosted celebrities such as REM, Lionel Richie and Manu Chao. Although the tickets may be quite expensive, many people bring their picnic basket and enjoy the music from outside. Join the locals for some homemade food and good music!
Street Festivals
Hamburg offers many street festivals; on those days, streets are closed to traffic and people set up stalls to sell their surplus belongings. Every street has its own identity and each festival is different… It’s a great way to spend the day!
Sports Events
Hamburg loves sports! Aside from its two legendary football clubs (FC Sankt Pauli and HSV), the city also offers many other sport events, such as the Marathon, the Triathlon or the EuroEyes Cyclassics. Take part in one of them or simply support the participants!
Visit the city of Stade
Take a break from the big city and visit the charming old town of Stade, which is 1 hour away from Hamburg and very well connected to it with the train system. You will fall in love with the typical houses and atmosphere!
